We hope you’ll SEA the RLM Team

Are y’all excited? There’s only 51 days until Advisor Orientation starts (have you started preparing? If not check this post or this post out)! Since you’ve gotten a chance to start meeting your new teams for the year (isn’t the excitement starting to feel so real)? We wanted to introduce you all to the new RLMT 2018/2019! (For more information on what RLM’s are and what they do, check out the “Acronyms of ResLife” blog post below!

Bailey Kew (Totem Park South)

Hello, my name is Bailey Kew and I am so excited to be joining the team as a Residence Life Manager at UBC. I am transitioning from a role at Capilano University where I had the opportunity to assist in the creation of CapU’s very first residence program. When I’m not chasing after dogs to pet, I can be found playing beach volleyball, cooking Thai food, or engaging in debates (pick a topic and name a coffee shop – I’ll be there). I genuinely look forward to having the opportunity to meet everyone in person; please feel welcome to stop by and introduce yourself. I hope you’re having a wonderful summer.

Paul graduated from UBC with a degree in Earth & Ocean Sciences and Biology. During his time at UBC, he was involved with Residence Life, the Student Leadership Conference, and Orientations, and is excited to return to his alma mater as a Residence Life Manager. Paul brings with him an international experience working with students in the United Kingdom, as well as a love for travel, food, and the outdoors.

Lyndon Duncan (Ponderosa Commons & Tallwood House)

Hello! I’m Lyndon Duncan and I’m incredibly excited to be joining UBC Student Housing and Hospitality Services as a Residence Life Manager. I completed a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science at UBC’s Okanagan Campus where I worked in Residence Life before coming to the Vancouver campus as a Residence Coordinator. Most recently I’ve been working as a Residence Life Coordinator at Mount Royal University in Calgary, AB where I helped to support students in residence through programming and managing an incredible team of student staff. Additionally, I was responsible for administering the residence conduct system, case work with students, and responding to after hours

emergencies. I love board games, Dungeon and Dragons, ultimate frisbee, and I’m always open to grabbing a coffee. If you see me around campus please don’t hesitate to come say hello!

Ivan Yastrebov (Braeburn House – Orchard Commons)

Having been at UBC since 2010, I am excited to join Student Housing and Hospitality Services as a Residence Life Manager! I started off living in Totem Park (which had double the population of my hometown) in 2010, and lived in student housing throughout my degree. I have been a Residence Advisor in Shuswap and q’ələχən, a Senior Advisor in MD4, and a Residence Coordinator in KootSL.  After graduating in 2015 with a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies (combining Biology and visual arts), I took on the role of a Communications and Marketing Assistant with the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. In my spare time I enjoy being outdoors (hiking, skiing, climbing etc.) and seeing what I can capture with my camera. I also love talking about philosophy/life and hearing others perspectives (drop by my office for a chat)! I look forward to getting to meet you in the upcoming months!”

During her time as a student at UBC , Linzi worked in both Totem Park and Place Vanier as a Residence Advisor as well as Place Vanier as a Residence Coordinator. Katherine (Katie) Macgregor (Walter Gage & Iona House)

Hi folks! My name is Katie MacGregor (she/her/hers) and I’m the Residence Life Manager of Walter Gage Residence and Iona House. I’ve been at UBC since summer 2017 and, before then, I worked as a volunteer manager for a non-governmental organization in Sri Lanka. I graduated from the University of Toronto Scarborough with a specialist in international development studies and worked in residence life in various roles throughout my undergraduate career. These days, when I’m not at work, I’m probably running in Pacific Spirit park, watching the sunset at Tower Beach, or outside of the city on a hike.

Amy Stewart (Marine Drive)

My name is Amy Stewart and I am the Residence Life Manager for Marine Drive Residence. I was born in South Africa but grew up in Latin America, which might explain some of my mannerisms, passion for the people in my life and the work I do, and my love of dancing! When I am not in the office, watching reality TV or completing a puzzle I spend my time volunteering for Lean in Canada. My current favorite Vancouver restaurant is La Taqueria so if you are ever heading there and are looking for some company, give me as shout! I really enjoy Advisor Orientation because of the energy, connections and learning that takes place every day and I look forward to meeting ya’ll this August at #AO2018.

Emma Chartrand (Acadia Park)

I moved to UBC 6 years ago with my partner and  our two children into Acadia Park. I have enjoyed living at UBC and being a part of the wonderful community here on campus.  Before moving to Vancouver, I worked as a School Counsellor and with youth and families in various community organizations. I just started working in Residence Life in 2016 and love the opportunity to support students and their families here!

In my free time I enjoy getting outside with my family!  Sometimes it is for a hike, a bike ride or to watch a soccer game.

Holly Dysserinck (Place Vanier)

Hi Residence Life! My name is Holly D and I was born and raised in the Vancouver area. Rainy days and mountain views are large parts of who I am….but unlike most Vancouverites I do not hike and my idea of the outdoors is sitting on a patio. I am an alumna of UBC (’14) having completed a Bachelor of Arts in French. I spent 2 years down South…as in Illinois, USA and am happy to have returned to this place I love so much!

Residence Life is where I found my fit at UBC and where I continue to find new passions within. I believe in the power of connecting with others and hearing their stories. My own passions include watching Netflix originals (Grace and Frankie, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt etc.) and falling deep into the Youtube hole of James Corden Carpool Karaoke videos.

Favourite Sea Creature – Orca Whales!

Mike Cheung (Manager, Residence Life Projects)

Howdy!  My name is Mike and I am the Manager, Residence Life Projects.  I graduated from McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario where I completed my Honours Bachelor of Science with a minor in Psychology, although, to be honest, I probably spent more time engaging in extra curriculars which included the Students Union, Residence Life and clubs.

Outside of work, I enjoy going for long drives, usually to the mall.  I love country music, exploring new places and tv shows. If you ever need a shopping recommendation, let me know!  I’ve been to AO a few times, and let me tell you, it was so exciting and energizing to be able to go through a training with new and familiar faces and start the year as a family.
