Meet the RLM Team!

Amy – RLM of Marine Drive Residence

AmyHello Rezlife,

My name is Amy Stewart and I am the Residence Life Manager for Marine Drive Residence. I have been fortunate to work as the RLM of MD for the past 4 years, and even more lucky to be attending my 8th AO this year! I was born in South Africa but grew up in Latin America, which might explain some of my mannerisms, passion for the people in my life and the work I do, and my love of dancing! I am currently also a student at Sauder and hope to graduate with my MBA in May next year, so when I am not at work in my office I am often at a library, study room or coffee shop working on school. My current favorite Vancouver restaurant is La Taqueria so if you are ever heading there and are looking for some company, give me as shout! I look forward to meeting ya’ll this August at #AO2016!

Holly – RLM of Place Vanier Residence

IMG_0006Hi SHHS! I am born and raised in the Vancouver area so rainy days and mountain views are large parts of who I am. I am an alumna of UBC (’14) and am extremely excited to be returning to a place I love so much!I have been completing a Master’s degree in College Student Personnel (to break it down: I study the life of university students) at Western Illinois University for the past 2 years. I have also been working in Residence Life in a Residence Coordinator type-role. If you are unfamiliar with where Western Illinois University is, here is a blog post that can help explain the cornfield surrounding, rural, midwestern hospitality life I have been living (this post is also a throwback to my first week abroad!).

Residence Life is where I found my fit at UBC and where I continue to find new passions within. I believe in the power of connecting with others and hearing their stories. My own passions include watching Netflix originals (like GRace and Frankie) , curling up with good books and sunny days on patios! I am thrilled to be returning to UBC and you can expect groovy good times and laughter as I navigate my way back into the Canadian way of things (please pardon the american accent I’ve adopted)!

Ivan – RLM of Orchard Commons Residence – Braeburn House

Having been at UBC since 2010, I am excited to join Student Housing and Hospitality Services as a Residence Life Manager! I started off living in Totem Park in 2010, and lived in student housing throughout my degree. I have been a Residence Advisor in Shuswap and q’É™ləχən, a Senior Advisor in MD4, and a Residence Coordinator in KootSL.  After graduating in 2015 with a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies (combining Biology and visual arts), I took on the role of a Communications and Marketing Assistant with the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. In my spare time I enjoy being outdoors (hiking, skiing, climbing etc.) and playing with my camera. I look forward to getting to meet you in the upcoming months!

Joey – RLM of Orchard Commons Residence – Bartlett House

Hi everyone! My name is Joey and I am one of the Residence Life Managers of Orchard Commons. This September is my decade anniversary at UBC – ten whole years since I started as a first year student! I graduated from UBC with a degree in General Science and during that time and afterwards, I lived in Place Vanier for around six years, as a RA, a RC, and as the RLM for the past four years. This year, I’m so excited to be a part of the first ever Orchard Commons team with Ivan – Opening a new residence area, starting new traditions and creating a community for our residents.

I’ve lived in Vancouver for most of my life after moving here from Hong Kong and every summer I’m reminded of how awesome it is to live here. I love traveling and am always thinking of where I can go next (I casually look through airBnB listings all the time) – but taking am taking a bit of a traveling hiatus for the rest of the year as my current big project is planning for my wedding next year…and the trips we can go on after that. Other than that small task (ha!), I’m enjoying my summer playing on a softball team, eating at restaurants around town, feeling stressed out every Sunday night when I watch “Game of Thrones”, and enjoying all the fun outdoor activities Vancouver has to offer.

I hope you’re all enjoying your summers and I look forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new faces at Advisor Orientation! It’s always my favourite part of August!

Kelli – Coordinator of Residence Events and the Programme Resource Centre

kelliHi everyone! My name is Kelli and I am the Coordinator of Residence Events and the Programme Resource Centre. I work on the RLM team, and in my role I oversee the Programme Resource Centre, in addition to planning residence-wide events (such as Opening Day!). I grew up all over BC and some of the places I lived include: Port Coquitlam, 100 Mile House, Prince George and Kelowna. I graduated from UBC with a degree in Kinesiology and minor in Psychology. During my undergrad, I was a Residence Advisor in Place Vanier and Walter Gage, a Senior Advisor in Marine Drive, and a Residence Coordinator in Place Vanier. I thoroughly enjoy tea, travel, crafting, sports, and baking! This summer I am on beach volleyball and softball teams, and have a few trips coming up. It has been a couple years since I have been at Advisor Orientation, and I absolutely cannot wait! See you all soon! 🙂

Kyle – RLM of Thunderbird Residence & Ponderosa Commons Residence

Hey everyone! My name is Kyle and I am the Residence Life Manager for Thunderbird Residence and Ponderosa Commons (formally known as Thunderosa!).

kyleI have been working out at UBC for four years.  I began as an RLM over at Totem Park and moved over to the suite upper year experience last summer and have loved it!

I grew up in Ontario in the small town of Dundas before heading to Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo for four years.  I spent my time there working in Residence Life and was involved in a variety of other campus activities.  I also spent a year finishing up my degree while working at the University of Guelph as an Assistant Residence Life Manager.

Over the summer Thunderbird and Ponderosa are busy as a Year Round Residence Properties.  We are also operating conferences out of Cedar House which brings a lot of activity to the Commonsblock on a daily basis.

I am keeping myself busy outside of work as well through participation in both softball and beach volleyball.  Later this summer I will be spending some time away at family my cottage in the Adirondacks of New York but am looking forward to the end of the summer and all the excitement of Advisor Orientation..

I have such a blast at Advisor Orientation every year and I am so excited about the energy you all bring each day.  I am really looking forward to seeing you all soon!  Enjoy your summer and we will see you soon!

Mike – RLM of Walter Gage Residence & Iona House Residences

mike

Howdy!  My name is Mike and I am the Residence Life Manager for Walter Gage & Iona Residences.  I started at UBC in June 2015 in the PRC and later transitioned into the RLM role in Walter Gage in January of 2016.  I graduated from McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario where I completed my Honours Bachelor of Science with a minor in Psychology, although, to be honest, I probably spent more time engaging in extra curriculars which included the Students Union, Residence Life and clubs.

Outside of work, I enjoy going for long drives, usually to the mall.  I love country music, exploring new places and tv shows.  If you ever need a shopping recommendation, let me know!  Last year was my first experience at Advisor Orientation, and let me tell you, it was so exciting and energizing to be able to go through a training with new and familiar faces and start the year as a family.

Pam and Patrick – RLMs of Totem Park Residence

Hello! We are Team Totem Park!

Team Totem has two Residence Life Managers, who are always there to assist each other if we’re ever shorthanded. Our starting line includes 9 Residence Coordinators who are front and center by providing mentorship, supervision, and coaching to our team of 60 Residence Advisors. Seeing how we have the home-ice advantage, we wanted to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves!

Starting on the North Side, Pamela “Mrs. Crosby” Wettlaufer, hails from Oakville, Ontario. She enjoys cheering on her other favorite teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Vancouver Canucks and the Pittsburgh Penguins (2016 Stanley Cup Champs!!) and has an unhealthy obsession with post-it notes, taking selfies, gourmet burgers, as well as Sidney Crosby. Pamela completed her undergrad at the University of Toronto in Political Science and Crime, Law and Deviance and starting this fall will be entering the UBC Project Management Certificate Program.

…and on the South Side, Patrick “Hat-trick” Grydziuszko was born in Athens, Greece. He enjoys camping in the outdoors, BBQing delicious food, bartending, as well as gardening! He completed his Bachelor of Science and Masters of Healthcare Administration from our very own UBC. Patrick also recently joined the Canadian Armed Forces as a reservist and works part time as a Healthcare Administration Officer each week.

We’re very excited to meet you, so make sure not to stay in the neutral zone for very long and introduce yourself to us! Don’t let this be a one-timer.

Game on!
